Wingsttop is one of the most popular and internet-famous restaurant franchises. It’s known for its juicy chicken wings, Cajun seasoning, and cheesy fries. After seeing it countless times on both Instagram and TikTok, I finally gave in, dragging my friends to an afternoon of taste-testing.
Now, I can answer the question: Is it really worth the hype?
The store arguably needed more atmosphere. We were greeted by stale decor, fluorescent lights, and limited seating (not from occupancy, but a small number of physical tables). The staff, however, were amiable and welcoming to every customer. When choosing our chicken, we picked from an array of 13 flavors, varying in spice levels. I chose the garlic parmesan and Louisiana Rub wings, pairing them with Wingstop’s signature Louisiana Voodoo Fries, which are coated in their famous ranch dressing, cheese sauce, and Cajun spicing. My friends ordered wings and cheesy fries in addition to the Cajun corn. Per person, the total came down to roughly $13. Given the quantity of food we wereable to purchase, the price felt very reasonable – even a good deal. Every meal also comes with a free fountain drink.
First up was the Voodoo fries, which pleasantly surprised me by their flavor and decadence. The fries were seasoned in salt and a bit of sugar, giving them a nice sweetness that conventional fries usually lack. The ranch and cheese sauces also paired well together and satisfied my every bite. The Cajun spice was prominent, and after a while, I started to feel the heat. Overall, the fries were my favorite dish and I will definitely be ordering more in the future.
Next up – the chicken! While the first bite was nice, I struggled to finish the rest. After a while, the chicken became heavy and almost unenjoyable to eat. I was also disappointed by the flavoring itself. The garlic parmesan didn’t have a very strong essence, and the Louisiana Rub lacked the spice I was promised. It appeared as if its true flavor had been lost to the pool of oil at the bottom of my container. While the chicken was underwhelming, I was told that the more authentic wings (which still include the bone and are properly marinated) are the better option despite being a little more expensive. I recommend the classic wings, not the boneless ones, to anyone wanting to visit.
For the vegetarians who generally avoid meat-oriented restaurants such as this one, the corn alone is worth your time. Doused in Cajun spices, sugar, and salt, this corn was favored by my tablemates. Dipping it in Wing Stop’s signature ranch sauce made it even more delicious, as tanginess, cream, sugar, and spice were all rolled into one. It was nice to end our meal on this high note.
Overall, eating at Wingstop was pleasant. The decadence and seasoning of its food make it perfect for late lunches after school (this location was only six blocks away!) Despite the disappointing chicken, my cravings were satiated. For the ranch sauce and Cajun spice alone, I believe everyone owes this place at least one visit.
